What the certification actually gets you
Master Elite is a manufacturer authorization rather than a quality medal, and the practical thing it changes is which warranties GAF will allow a contractor to register against your address. That is the whole of the difference, and it is worth more than it sounds.
The coverage it unlocks runs up to fifty years on materials and twenty five years on workmanship, in a document that stays with the property and transfers when you sell it. The paperwork sits with the house, not with the crew who installed the roof and not with the company that sold it to you.
That distinction matters in a trade where the installing company may not be the company answering the phone in fifteen years. A warranty registered to your address is backed by the manufacturer, and a manufacturer is a great deal easier to find later than a contractor.
The GAF Golden Pledge warranty, in plain terms
The Golden Pledge is one of GAF's strongest warranties, and only a Master Elite contractor can register one. It is the practical reason the certification exists from a homeowner's point of view.
It covers the materials under GAF's Lifetime term, non-prorated for the first fifty years on a single-family detached home, and the workmanship for twenty five to thirty years depending on the shingle, which is the part most homeowners misread. Material coverage is common. Workmanship coverage, backed by the manufacturer rather than by the installer, is the rarer half: it means GAF stands behind how the roof was put on, not only what it was made of.
It transfers with the property. If you sell, the coverage goes to the buyer with the house, which is a negotiating point at a sale rather than a piece of paper in a drawer.
Is hiring a GAF Master Elite contractor worth it?
It is worth it when you want the Golden Pledge, and close to irrelevant when you do not. That is a more useful answer than the one most roofing sites give, and it is the honest one.
The certification buys you access to a warranty tier that an uncertified contractor cannot sell you at any price. If that coverage is what you are after, the credential is the gate and there is no way around it. If you are replacing a roof on a property you intend to sell next year, or the budget only supports a standard system, the credential changes very little about the job itself.
What it does not do is guarantee a better crew on your specific roof. It sets a floor, audited annually, and the floor is real. Anyone telling you it guarantees more than that is selling.
GAF Master Elite compared with GAF Certified
GAF runs three certification levels, and the names are close enough to be confusing. GAF Certified is the entry level: the contractor is licensed, insured and known to GAF. GAF Certified Plus sits in the middle, and Master Elite sits above both and must meet GAF's yearly renewal minimums, set out in the next answer, rather than holding the status once granted.
The difference a homeowner can actually act on is the warranty ladder. A GAF Certified contractor can register GAF's System Plus warranty. Only Master Elite can register the Golden Pledge, with its manufacturer backed workmanship coverage.
If a quote mentions GAF but not which tier, that is a fair question to ask before you sign anything.
How a contractor earns GAF Master Elite certification
GAF decides which contractors take part in its certification program, and it publishes the minimum requirements. Every level starts with the same three: a state license where the business is based, if that state requires one, $1 million in liability insurance, and workers' compensation insurance. GAF says it may also consider factors such as years of roofing experience and customer reviews, and its program guidelines set no minimum number of years in business.
Master Elite is then reviewed every year. To be considered for renewal, a Master Elite contractor must meet the yearly minimums GAF lists as 1000 Rewards Squares (Shingles Only), 500 Warranty Squares (Silver & Golden Pledge) and 10 Learning Credits. GAF adds that meeting them does not guarantee Master Elite status, and that additional requirements and considerations apply.
Vero Exteriors earned Master Elite in April 2025 and holds it today. The designation tells you GAF currently judges the company to meet its standard; it is not a measure of how long a company has been in business.

Is GAF Master Elite the highest honor in roofing?
It is the highest level GAF awards, which is not quite the same claim. Other roofing manufacturers run their own top contractor tiers, and none of them ranks the others.
What makes Master Elite meaningful in practice is scarcity within its own programme: it is held by roughly two percent of roofing contractors in North America. A tier that most contractors hold would not tell you anything.
The useful question is not which manufacturer badge is best in the abstract. It is which material system you want on your roof, and whether the contractor holds the top tier for that system.
How to find and verify a Master Elite roofer near you
Check it yourself rather than taking it from a truck or a website. GAF publishes a contractor locator and a verification page at gaf.com: type the company name in, and if the Master Elite badge is not on that listing then the company does not hold it, whatever else you have been told.
While you are checking, check the license too. In Arizona a roofing contractor must be licensed by the Registrar of Contractors, the number belongs on published advertising, and the register is public. Ours is AZ ROC #358383 and the search at roc.az.gov will confirm it in about thirty seconds.
Two checks, a minute of your time, and they are the two that are actually verifiable. Most of what a roofing company tells you about itself is not.
